Catalan tower
Beacon tower which dates from early XVII century, was ordered to built by Felipe II because of a defensive plan of the south-west coast of the Iberian peninsula, with the aim to defend themselves from the Berber pirate´s attacks and to protect the Indian fleet. To announce the danger, due to the intrusion of enemy boats, they made fire signals, at night, and smoke signals or waving white cloths during the day.
This tower is located in one of the most thousand-year-old scrubland that skirt the coast, midway between La Antilla and El Terrón, in Lepe´s south, to 37 meters above sea level.
It seems like a stunted trunk and has got a rectangular hallway whose entrance is through a door with lintel and it´s covered by a semicircular vault and inside it find the only circular room. Its preservation is good. Now it´s possible to watch it, quite a lot removed from the sea due to the strong marine regression on this area.
The wonderful views that are discerned from this place, stand out in this zone. The marvelous outlook of the coastal zone, the Piedras river, the Nueva Umbría´s sandbar, the beaches,..., turn this place in a fantastic natural viewing-point.
